To
open a book and sink into it! Jungle on one page, a battle raging on the next.
No one could reach you on that narrow ledge between Period and Captain Letter.
Like a wood louse, he could pop in between the pages, lie still, peek out
sometimes. He could tickle the words on their backs so they laugh, a laugh heard
only by him. He could wander around in the forest of words where the light plays
so beautifully, and behind every curve in the text something new: words as
arches, as crowns of trees, as trunks and flames of fire. Strange animals moving
about with cries he had never heard before. There he could find secret cities,
villages, ships, and people who talked in many different ways. Grown people were
there, as were those already dead, and all of them taught him things he perhaps
shouldn't know yet. There was much he did not understand, and that gave him
pleasure most of all, because there was a world before him then which he must
reach. The incomprehensible was the best, or as he would write one day: I do
not know, therefore I must go further.
[The
Christmas Oratorio, p.4]
I
was forced to shut my eyes against the snow and, pulling my coat collar high
above my ears, let the material provide a calm enclave. I was in my own time's
bewildered labyrinth as I continued along that street, where once I had named so
many things. Even as I was taking adult steps, another part of me was three
years old. The hand clutching my portfolio simultaneously held my mother's hand,
pointed at an ice cream cone, fought its way free from a battle in Greece,
followed the delights of a musical score. Every act in the past yielded a
thousand other possibilities, all trickling toward along their own future. And
they so continue, further into the wilderness of consciousness, shadows that
hunt and are hunted. It is never still.
[The
Christmas Oratorio, p.4]
