Course description:
An introductory
course on political and economic issues relevant to developing or “third world’
countries. We will discuss why some countries are less developed,
what problems they are facing and what policies could be used to deal with
these problems. We will also touch on various development issues in Taiwan.

VIII. Grading:
1.
Course participation (10%): Students are
expected to read carefully prior the class, to attend each class and to class
discussion.
2.
Question raising and discussion (30%):
Students are formed in discussion groups and each group will choose a topic,
from 3 to 12 and pose at least FIVE analytical questions before each
class, which should reveal their understanding of the readings and be closely
related to the class topic. Each group will accommodate at most EIGHT students
who will sign up at the start of the semester. The question(s) will be graded
according to its relevance to the readings/topics, thoroughness in scope and
clearness in explanations.
3. Responses to questions (20%): Each student, after class discussion, has to submit responses/answers to at least THREE questions from her/his group online before the next class.
4.
Final
exam (40%).
